We take $0 from energy retailers — so the cheapest plan is the only plan we have any reason to show you.

Why we built WattCheck

Like most Australians, we assumed electricity comparison sites were on our side. Upload your details, see the best plan, switch and save. Simple.

Then we looked under the hood.

Most comparison sites earn a commission from energy retailers every time a customer switches. That single fact changes everything — the “best plan” they show you isn’t necessarily the cheapest plan. It’s the plan that pays them the most.

We built WattCheck to fix that.

The idea was simple: give people the full comparison for free, take nothing from retailers, and let the maths speak for itself. Our only revenue is the optional $39/year monitoring subscription — never the retailer being compared — so there's no financial reason to favour anyone.

The other problem: guesswork

Even the honest comparison tools make you work. Manually enter your supply charge. Estimate your daily usage. Figure out your tariff type. Calculate your peak vs off-peak split.

Most Australians don't know these figures off the top of their head — and have to dig out their bill just to answer the questions.

So we built WattCheck to read your bill directly. Upload your PDF or photograph the page — we extract every rate, every charge, every usage figure automatically and calculate your saving based on your exact consumption. Not a generic household average. Not a slider estimate. Your actual usage, your actual rates, your actual saving. No guesswork. No generic household profiles.

The complexity behind the simplicity

Comparing electricity plans sounds straightforward. It isn't.

Building WattCheck's nightly data pipeline, we ingest over 13,000 electricity plans from 28 retailers across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT every single night. Each plan carries dozens of variables — daily supply charges, peak rates, off-peak rates, shoulder rates, controlled load tariffs, solar feed-in rates, time-of-use windows, block rate tiers, demand charges, conditional discounts, account credits and more.

Before a single comparison can be made, every plan goes through our quality classification engine. Rate components are normalised for GST treatment — which varies by retailer and isn't disclosed in the CDR feed. Time-of-use rate classifications are resolved across inconsistent retailer implementations. Synthesised estimate plans are identified and separated from genuine market offers. Stale rates — plans that haven't been updated following regulatory change cycles — are flagged and disclosed.

Then there's the network resolution layer. Australia has over 20 electricity distribution networks. The right plans for your address depend on which network services your street — not just your state. WattCheck resolves your network from your bill and CDR data, then filters plans down to only those available at your specific location.

All of this happens in the background — invisibly, automatically.

What you see is simple: upload your bill, see your saving. What happens underneath is anything but.

Who we are

WattCheck is built by Ausentis Labs, an independent Australian software studio based in Melbourne. We have no investors, no retailer partnerships and no affiliate relationships. Our only revenue is the optional $39/year subscription.

We built WattCheck because we believe Australians deserve a comparison tool that genuinely works for them — not one that works for the retailers they're comparing.

Ausentis Labs exists to build tools grounded in mathematical truth and zero commercial bias. WattCheck is the first. It won't be the last.

Our values

Zero affiliate bias

We take $0 from energy retailers. Ever. The optional subscription is our only revenue — which means we have one job: find you the cheapest plan available in our data. Full stop.

Mathematical accuracy

We read your actual bill — every rate, every charge, every usage figure. Your saving is calculated from your actual bill, not a household average.

Data integrity

We process and quality-classify over 13,000 plans every night so your comparison is always based on current, verified data. When we find issues, we report them to the regulator.
