Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Ausentis Labs Pty Ltd ("Ausentis Labs", "we", "us") handles personal information collected through the WattCheck service. It is maintained by Ausentis Labs and is intended to comply with the Australian Privacy Principles (APP) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

1. Who we are

WattCheck is a product of Ausentis Labs Pty Ltd, an Australian company based in Melbourne, Victoria (ABN 26 699 165 207). You can reach our privacy team at privacy@ausentis.com.au.

2. What data we collect

To produce a plan comparison, WattCheck processes the minimum information needed:

Your residential postcode (to match the correct distribution network and regulated reference price).
Bill data extracted from the PDF you upload — typically retailer, tariff type, supply charge, usage rates and controlled-load rates.
Usage data — your daily/quarterly kWh totals, time-of-use splits (if present), and solar export.
Basic technical metadata (browser, timestamp, error logs) used only to keep the service running.

For Annual subscribers ($39/year) only:

Your National Meter Identifier (NMI) — stored as a one-way cryptographic hash to verify your meter on future uploads. The full NMI is never stored; only the last 3 digits are retained for display purposes.
Your bill usage profile (network, tariff type, state, consumption figures) — retained to enable quarterly market comparisons.

We do not ask for your name, address, account number, or payment-account details in order to produce a comparison. If you choose to purchase a paid tier, payment details are handled by Stripe (stripe.com), our PCI-compliant payments processor. Ausentis Labs never stores your card details. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/au/privacy.

3. How we use your data

We use the data above for one purpose: to calculate and display an electricity plan comparison for your specific usage profile. We do not use your data to profile you, to build advertising audiences, or to train third-party models.

4. Who we share it with

Nobody. WattCheck is 100% consumer-funded and independent. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with energy retailers, brokers, marketers, or referral networks. We do not receive commissions for switches. The sole exception is Stripe, our payments processor, which receives only the payment information necessary to process your transaction. Stripe does not receive your bill data or usage profile.

5. Data retention

Free users (full comparison):

Uploaded bills and extracted usage figures are processed transiently — held in memory only long enough to produce your comparison and not written to durable storage. Aggregated, non-identifying technical logs may be retained for up to 30 days for security and reliability.

Annual subscribers ($39/year):

To enable quarterly monitoring, we retain the following for the duration of your active subscription:

Your NMI hash and last 3 digits — to verify your meter on future uploads.
Your bill usage profile (network, tariff type, state, consumption figures) — to run quarterly market comparisons.
Your quarterly comparison results — retained for up to 12 months to track savings over time.

All subscriber data is permanently deleted within 30 days of subscription cancellation or expiry. You may request early deletion at any time by emailing privacy@ausentis.com.au.

6. Your rights under the Privacy Act 1988

You have the right to:

Ask what personal information (if any) we hold about you.
Request correction or deletion of that information.
Complain about how we handle your personal information.

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@ausentis.com.au. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

7. Cookies

WattCheck uses a small number of strictly necessary cookies and equivalent browser storage to keep your session working (for example, to remember your most recent comparison). We do not use third-party advertising cookies. Any analytics we run is privacy-preserving and aggregated.
